Teaching Your Little Ones. Are They Ready?
How many times have you tried to ask your little one to sit with you and start studying but they just won't keep still or won't listen to you at all?
I am sure, as parents we all have that inner wish that we have smart, genius kids.
This girl, though she loves to draw, doodle and paint, was not quite interested in books. It was almost a struggle for me to get her to read.
So I started pasting SIGHT WORDS on our walls.
I do not have a colored printer so I doodled some drawings on some pages to make them "attractive". LOL.
The drawing beside the word "He" is still a hot topic for debate between my two young learners.
I think, I absentmindedly answered "Yes" to Little Monster when he asked me if that read "gingerbread man". So each time, he refers to the word as "gingerbread man" instead of "he"🚹. 😂
Healthy Competition
At night, before we sleep or any other time of the day, we do some practice reading. Little Miss, the competitive one, loves a "one-on-one" with Little Monster. This is good because she gets challenged while the little one also gets to learn.
We also do some "word bank" challenges where we have a given letter and they need to give words that start with that letter. Kuya, our eldest is not excluded and he needs to give more complex and longer words. We write down these words on the whiteboard and turn this exercise into a reading session later on.
Flash Cards
We have this box gathering dust on our bookshelf. We have not opened it for a long time until this morning when Little Miss came to me saying she wanted to study. The cards are color coded per category - house, food, professions, numbers and colors, etc, etc.
We had a few rounds-- reading and math included. She even suggested her own "card game". Little Monster joined us a while later and the two had the reading competition on again.
After a few rounds and a lot of mess, they got tired and it was time to clean up. She got tested this time for her patience to gather each flash card and sort them per color/category.
My Few Takeaways from Today:
- Don't enforce things to your kids things they are not ready yet. They will show signs when they are.
- Create a stimulating environment for learning.
- Introduce some healthy competitions, do not spark jealousy and insecurity amongst your kids.
- Make learning fun!
How about you? How do you start engaging your kid to new topics, lessons or skills?
