Learn Guitar: Maxim 2, Being in Tune is Key

in #education6 years ago

If you are just playing guitar or any harmonic, less rhythm/percussion emphasized instrument then being in tune isn’t likely too important beyond how you practice the instrument yourself and have muscle memory of certain areas/positions realizing certain tones and so fourth.

But what if you are playing with multiple harmonic type instruments? Or what if you want to have someone else play what you are playing and you want to be able to usefully be able to communicate to them your desire for them to act as you wish?

Tuning, like Standard Tuning on guitar, which realizes string tunings from low to high of:

E, A, D, G, B, E

(tuned in 4ths, except B, which is tuned as 3rd so repeats back to E as 4th)
(maxim 1: repetition is an important part of learning)

Tuning helps create a standard which can help two or more instruments match and play in harmonically. Tuning also helps people communicate and replicate what they want.

I can play some guitar. It does clear the mind. Agreed. Being in tune is key. A piano can help in getting in tune.

pianos are great as long as they themselves are also in tune. Playing gitbox is a great experience and a good way to spend a night with some brews and friends!!

It is key.. I think it's the first thing that should be taught to children and new learners.. I'm always surprised to find that new players have not learned the basics of tuning yet.
... and it's a whole different experience learning to tune on stage. You may tune fine in a quiet room.. try it where you can't hear or see your guitar. I always suggest if you're looking to play in public, get you some good jokes to say while you tune; especially for those particular bad tuning nights.

yep, its nice for electrics, plug in tuners are usually pretty good as long as you dont over tighten. Thanks for your thoughts and support. Hope to post whatever insights I have!!

I'd like to add that if you are playing with a vocalist, or even doing the vocals while you play, it is extremely important to tune up using a tuner so you have a constant pitch for the vocals every time you play.

While your instrument will work and sound fine on its own in any pitch, as long as each string is in 'proper tune', a vocalist relies on his or her muscles/voice which can make it difficult to sing in key if you use different pitches.

Constant tuning in the same pitch will ensure your singer sounds good every time.
