Bridge Phrases :: Sound more Natural, Native
Peace Steemians,
Bridge phrases are really just ways of describing the same situation in a different context.
So, let's say I'm working in a call center and a customer thanks me for doing MORE than I needed to do to solve his problem.
Maybe I called another company to fix an issue or something like that and the customer is really appreciative.
So he says, "Thanks so much! You really went the extra mile."
Now, you might not know exactly what this means, but from the situation, you understand generally that this person is thanking you for doing additional work you didn't have to do.
You went the EXTRA mile, meaning you did MORE work than was expected, and doing so made the customer happy.
Think of this phrase like running four miles to strengthen your legs, but then you run an EXTRA mile for even MORE training.
This phrase isn't specifically for call centers because it's just describing a common situation.
So you can now use it when talking about OTHER topics:
A: The waiter gave us a free bottle of wine with our meal.
B: Wow, he really went the extra mile!
A: I think she's going to win the "most improved player" award on her softball team this year.
B: I hope so! She really HAS gone the extra mile and improved a lot.
A: You really went the extra mile on this report. It looks great!
B: Thanks! I worked very hard on it all weekend.
