Sorry for not posting as much lately but, currently I am in the middle of exams; thus i would not be able to be as active.
1. The effect.
The Magnus effect is a commonly observed effect especially in sports, where a spinning ball starts moving away from it estimated bath turning right, left, gaining lift or going downwards.
The Magnus effect was discovered by Magnus, when he wanted to know why the cannon ball turns slightly from its predicted pass.
2. The Reason.
When a ball or a cylinder is spinning while being thrown it has some friction from the air trying to slow it down. Some of the air resistance is hitting the spinning side which forms drag with the ball and turns with it, so these air particles change direction into moving with the spin and forms a force thanks to newton third law that pushes the ball opposite to the flow of that air (perpendicular to the spin of the ball.). While the air particles that hits the half opposite to the spin just acts like the common way air resistance would.
3. The cause of the spin.
Any ball can start spinning after throwing it without a spin because, of any rough and soft spots in a ball where the side that have a rougher surface area makes the air particles generate more turbulence, which leads the air taking more time to pass through that side and curves around the ball. So more particles of air is pushing the rough side which not only leads the ball to spinning but it also leads the Magnus force to act on the rough side.
4. Usage.
The Magnus effect is not only present or, used in sports. Since some sail ships uses huge rotating cylinders (Flettner rotor) to decrease the usage of diesel and increase its speed. Also, there was an aircraft prototype which uses these cylinders to generate lift. Because they generated more lift than a normal wing However, they had a lot of air resistance making it hard to control.

it was a research for about a year ago. that was ordered form us at school. i looked at a multitude of sources so i could not get it now, yet i remember being must influenced by Veritasium's videos about the topic
