Improve Your Writing Skills With This Grammar Game

in #education6 years ago

Some of us (probably most of us) are amateur writers, while the rest are most likely more skilled at the art. But, even if this is the case, there is always room for improvement. Here’s the good news! You don’t have to study endless textbooks and write lengthy essays to improve your writing skills, oh no, you simply need to round up some mates and give a game go. A grammar game, that is.

The internet has tons of game ideas that you could play alone or with friends and family that aim at improving your spelling, sentence structures, punctuation and you thought it, GRAMMAR. While they all seem like a hoot, I’ve selected one that stood out to me.

The Exact-Number Sentences Game

This game is quite ideal in that you can challenge yourself, or you can play with as many other participants as you wish, there’s no set minimum or maximum number of players required. It requires little preparation and no other materials, apart from some pens and paper.

Playing the game:

As an individual or together as a group, you need to decide on a series of numbers, for instance: 7,10,5,4,9,4,6,8. The challenge is to then write a story  where the number of words in each sentence matches the number sequence, in the exact same order.

For example:

It was a cold and dark evening. Sarah hugged her coat around her as she walked slowly. Her heart was beating fearfully. But she remained brave. This was her opportunity to prove herself to others. This was her moment. She leaped onto her saddled horse. She waved to her family as she left.

If you are playing with a group of people, the first person to finish their short story according to the number of words required in each sentence, following the sequence, is the winner!

This game challenges you to not only choose your words wisely, but it also makes you more aware of punctuation and sentence structure. To add, apart from developing writing skills, this sort of game is amazing when trying to build logic and developing cognitive abilities. Try it, it’s much harder than it seems!

If you are a teacher, this game would be an excellent pass time to do with students when they have finished their other tasks! You could give individuals some number sequences to write a few stories while sitting quietly at their desks, or you could use it as a team building activity, where I am sure you will enjoy a good laugh or two!

Stay tuned. More fun writing games to follow!
