image source Call it eye mucus, pus or its real name rheum, use the name you use but you know that crystallized mucus of a whitish or yellowish color that forms in your eyes after a few hours of sleep.

This secretion is actually composed of a set of very diverse substances, among others, dead cells, mucus and even waste (which includes bacteria, the fat of the eyelids and dust), which accumulates around the eyelids when We have them closed for a while,it is a combination of mucus, oil, skin cells and other debris that accumulate in the inner corner of the eye while we sleep.

the secretion of the eyes has a protective function, since it extracts waste products and potentially harmful sediments, which come from the tear film and the anterior surface of their eyes.

Our eyelids are closed like a zipper, from the area of the cheeks to the nose. When they do, they push the tears to their eyes, picking up all those substances in their path. this compound accumulates on the edge of the eyes or on the lower eyelid, or even slightly on the upper eyelid. It would be like a kind of exfoliant, which removes dead skin and any unnecessary surface residue,It can be moist and sticky or dry and crusty, depending on the amount of fluid contained in the secretion that has evaporated.

it is not sterile , because no part of your body is sterile, not even the eyes. That said, if you take off the stenches with your hands (which is not recommended at all) use a damp and warm cloth, it would not be a bad idea to wash your hands afterwards.

Normally, the rheum have a tone similar to that of the cream, although it can get dark if you wear makeup. Bacterial or viral infections can also increase the production of eye rheum, or give a more yellowish or greenish color (at this point, you should consult your doctor).

If these secretions are quite dry, it can be the cause of a too dry environment. On the other hand, your eyes can also generate more mucus if you have more snot than normal. In this case, allergies have a lot to do with it.

The eye produces mucus in response to allergens in the air. When allergens such as pollen reach the eyes, they cause a mucous secretion that surrounds the pollen and brings it to the edge of the eye.

In addition, people who wear contact lenses can experience increased eye secretion because, technically, their eyes are exposed to a foreign body all day. If the lens does not fit your eye too well, or if it has accumulated some debris (such as pollen), the eyes will generate a lot of mucus. However, even if the contact lens fits perfectly to your eye, you will still experience a slight excess of mucus in your eyes.

If the amount of rheum that your body produces varies, it may be an eye infection or other related problem. However, if excessive production of legumes is chronic, it may indicate something else, such as irritation from dust or allergy. If you have a lot of lashes on your eyelashes, to the point that your eyes get stuck in the morning, it could be a sign of blepharitis, which is a slight swelling of the eyelids.
