Capitulation of Toledo
The Capitulation of Toledo is the power that was given to Francisco Pizarro through a capitulation to be the governor of the conquered lands (Nueva Castilla).
In 1528 Francisco Pizarro began the trip to Spain to obtain the power over the lands conquered until that moment, but when he arrived he was imprisoned for debts obtained in the past. After this incident he went to the meeting of King Carlos I bringing with him several gifts such as some Tumbes Tiffin, llamas, gold, silver, ceramics and textiles.
Francisco Pizarro had to negotiate the terms with the Council of the Indies, being president of this council the Count of Osorno. After the negotiation with the Council of the Indies, the agreement was reached with the Queen consort Isabel of Portugal (powers delegated by her husband Carlos I of Spain) on July 26, 1529, this due to the absence of King Carlos I of Spain .
Some points of the capitulation of Toledo.
1.-Francisco Pizarro is granted the privilege of discovery and conquest of the entire region between the Tempula River or Santiago (Ecuador) and 200 leagues south of this point.
2.-To give Pizarro the titles of governor of "Nueva Castilla" (Peru), named after his castles, Captain General, Chief Constable, Adelantado, as well as the faculty of entrusting Indians, in addition to receiving an annual salary of 725,000 maravedíes.
3.-The governorship of the Tumbes Fortress is granted to Almagro, he is promoted to the rank of Hidalgo and is given the right to collect a salary lower than that of Pizarro (300,000 maravedis per year).
4.-Hernando de Luque receives the bishopric of Tumbes and the title of "Protector of the Indians". In addition to an annual income of 1000 ducats.
5.-To the Thirteen of the Island of the Rooster they are named hidalgos of solar well-known and to those that already were it, the degree of "Horsemen of the Golden Espuela" is granted them.
6.-Bartolomé Ruíz was named "Pilot Mayor of the South Sea" and 75,000 maravedis of annual salary.
7.-Pedro de Candia was named "Artillero Mayor del Perú" and Regidor de Tumbes.
