There are many dads and moms who have been suffering from an anxiety or depression disorder for some time, properly controlled, and that does not make them bad parents at all; however, it is normal that there are special considerations to be made regarding the treatment of your children.
There is scientific evidence that some disorders, such as depression, have a genetic root; and of course that puts many in doubt, since the possible consequences in newborns can range from the onset of sleep disorders and attention deficit, to behavioral problems and development of depression in adulthood. However, some isolated studies have suggested that the appearance of the aforementioned problems is due more to the drugs used to treat them than to the disorder itself. Unfortunately, little is known about this yet.
While it is true that a child is more likely to develop a mental disorder if you also have one of their parents, this is not a rule and you should not allow your mental condition to interfere with your desire to become a father or mother, while you are under the correct treatment.
Perinatal psychiatrist Carly Snyder says that both women and men who suffer a mental disorder and want to be parents should not repress those desires, as the consequences of doing so can have a much stronger impact on the quality of life. However, he warns that a treatment must be initiated (in the case of not having it yet) and be committed to follow it "to the letter", since that will be the guarantee that there will be no consequences in the children or in the dynamics of the breeding.
