I agree that you have to be guarded at work, and that controversial and unpopular political views can backfire on you, but you don't have to treat co-workers as enemies or rivals in all situations. Work can also involve collaboration so that everyone benefits, not just competition against one another where everyone is fighting for a "fixed pie." In many cases, being liked by others can contribute to your job security in the same way that providing good economic value for the company does.

If you are at a social gathering with alcohol, it is completely within your power to not drink or to drink in moderation and not embarrass yourself. Gossip is to be avoided, absolutely.
