Why You Should Be Excited And Terrified For Jordan Peele's New Movie Us
Jordan Peele's breakout debut as a writer-director of Get Out won the Oscar for best screenplay. His follow up is Us, and the newest trailer makes the movie look fascinating and terrifying all at the same time.
Finally getting to watch the trailer for Jordan Peele's new movie Us after boxing day, I'm horrified to say that it was a big mistake. I took the trailer in first thing in the morning, and it kind of ruined my day. Not because it was bad or anything of the sort. But more because I was genuinely freaked out by whatever this movie is supposed to be. And in that regard, Us will be a horrifying success.
After the subversive and subtle genre thriller Get Out, Peele has established himself as the next big thing in Hollywood, with all eyes on him. So this new follow up to that level of success, was keenly anticipated by insiders and audiences alike. And I think it's safe to say that the wait was worth it. The trailer opens with a family on a road trip, who are eventually terrorized by creepy versions of themselves. Us looks like a complete horror show with a lot of violence, gore, but most importantly, liberal amounts of non-stop scares. The trailer is very eery in the beginning but then goes completely off the rails into one of the most terrifying things I've ever seen.
Peele amasses an all-star cast for Us, with Winston Duke (Black Panther) and Lupita Nyongo (12 Years A Slave) as the dad and mom of a family with a young son and daughter. They're seen vacationing with their friend (Elizabeth Moss), who seems to have a minor role based on the trailer, but knowing Peele, it will be a significant part of the story.
Us has been getting a lot of deep analysis online got its potential layers of subtext, themes, and analogies. Get Out played with the issues of race and the historical racism within America. So naturally, everyone and their grandma are all up in arms about the potential 'message' or allegory behind the events of Us. The biggest criticisms seem to stem from the interpretation that Peele is conveying that African-American's have themselves to blame for their challenges in today's world.
In an Entertainment Weekly exclusive, writer-director of Us, Jordan Peele has already spoken about how Us is not about race. However, that doesn't stop many from analyzing and being outraged by what they think is the message behind the movie. Personally, I believe that it's always best to reserve judgment until the final product is experienced. So I'll definitely be holding off on any deep analysis or conjectures about Us' subtext of themes until I've seen the movie for myself.
In the meantime, the Us trailer is definitely going to be an interesting movie to look out for, and with the release of more trailers and marketing in the coming days leading to its release, I'm sure we will the treated to more revelations of story and subject matter.
