In the near future, human fertility rates collapse as a result of sexually transmitted diseases and environmental pollution. With this chaos in place, the totalitarian, Christian theonomic government of "Gilead" establishes rules in the former United States in the aftermath of a civil war. Society is organized by power-hungry leaders along a new, militarized, hierarchical regime of fanaticism and newly created social classes, in which women are brutally subjugated, and by law are not allowed to work, own property, handle money, or read. Worldwide infertility has resulted in the conscription of the few remaining fertile women in Gilead, called "Handmaids", according to an extremist interpretation of a Biblical story. They are assigned to the homes of the ruling elite, where they must submit to ritualized rape by their male masters in order to become pregnant and bear children for those men and their wives.

Tell the story from June Osborne o better known like Offred one of the haindmaid's, she is one of the last women with fertility, along the story we can see how June live all the change from being a Woman with all her rights to be a handmaid, all this through flashback that she have. She is the handmaid assigned to the Commander Fred Waterford and his wife Serena Joy, June is called like his owner just like the rest of the handmaid's.

In the handmaids each woman has a roll and is dressed in a color wich represent their roll. The handmaids are dressed in red with a white cap. The Marthas are dressed in green they are the cooks and house cleaning. The aunts are dressed in brown they are the commissioned to train and prepare the maids for their job. They are also the eyes who is the secret cops they watch all the people do, the hunters are who are the ones who track down all the people who are trying to run away from the country .The Jezebels are secret prostitutes only for the elite.
