The 90's were like a crazy experiment happpening all over the place, there were many things back then that wouldn't get the green light by today's standards, and others that will for ever remain as part of this era's culture. One of these experiments included Saban's adaptation of japanese tokusatsu series for the american public!

Here are 4 shows that were made from entirely different Universes!

Big Bad Beetleborgs

These ironbugs were pretty much the paranormal power rangers, this time three kids entered a haunted mansion and released a ghost from a pipe organ , the ghost offered to grant them one wish, and they wished to become their comic book heroes, because why wouldn't you wish that? The ghost equipped the kids with lasers, guns, battle robots and drills, he also provided them with super powers like telekinesis, superstrenght and superspeed,if you were a kid this show could literally give you a heart attack

You couldn't possibly ask for anything more than all the things I just mentioned, but it wouldn't be bad if we added some plot from the original series Saban took all the footage from, Juko-B Fighter.

Juko B figther was a whole different thing, just like all of the shows we're gonna be talking about today. The plot was crazy, insects all over the world started to swarm for no reason, animals and plants were acting strange too so the earth academia decided to bug in and see what was going on down there. Turns out all these wild species were making a comando-like training to fight againt the evil creatures that are coming from another dimension.

Using the lifeforce of insects (Which I believe is crushing bugs so fast your feet just fire up) they powered up and forged special suits to help the wild life of the planet. It's deffently worth watching!

Masked Rider

Dex (cool name) prince of Edenoi, runs away to planet Earth after bad uncle Dragen takes his grandfather’s empire and now wants to destory everything because evil. The show plays as a Star Wars meets Power Rangers in the club kind of spin off. It was pretty interesting as it expanded the Power Ranger’s universe by making Edenoi the planet in which Alpha 5 was created by Lexian, Dex’s grandfather. Lexian Gave Dex his cool suit and a radical bike to go to school.

The western footage was terrible, but we certainly enjoyed watching the masked rider fight scenes, of course the original show was nothing, and we mean nothing like this. With a much darker tone, toei's Kamen Rider Black was the story about 2 brothers who got kipnapped and were submitted to a cyborg surgery by a cult to make them the next candidates to become Gorgom’s Creation King. They were destined to fight each other in a final battle and who ever wins will become the next Creation King. Saban used footage from Kamen Rider Black RX but that one made no sense if you didn’t know the first part of the story so there you go. The other part is just the same but another bad guy and more emotions

VR Troopers

Saban wanted to keep cashing on the kids who were starving for more giant robot/putty crushing action but also wanted to do the same with the older audience who back at the time was highly interested in Virtual Reality due to all the fake publicity it was getting. Saban knew people didn't know much about VR, so let's put the word in the title and sell it because why not? He literally did this, but it worked. The show wasn't so bad, it was your average sci fi tokusatsu show, it did well but it couldn't last as much, not even remotly as much as its brother franchise, the Power Rangers

The origins of VR troopers link back directly to our first entry, the Beetleborgs, since the show was made using 3 seasons from the Metal Hero saga, the mother franchise Juko-b figther came from.

The studio used footage from Uchu Keiji Shaider, Metal Hero’s third season, to create the show. It also used footage from Jiku Senshi Spielvan and Chojinki Metalder, it looked pretty cool and as I said earlier, it did pretty well, it was yet another evidence that if you were a teen ager in the 90s, you had to be ready to give up everything and save the world because nobody cares when you're a hero

The Power Rangers

All the shows we've mentioned so far ran for about 2 to 3 seasons, they were midly succesful back in their time but they didn't become trascendetal. Only one show remained from all these crazy experiments up until now and it shows no sign of stopping any time soon; The Power Rangers Franchise

One of the longest running action series for everyone, Power Rangers cemented a legacy on the Giant Robot World. However, it was Saban's first adaptation of the show, Mighty Morphin, that started the whole thing, and if you ever felt you were watching two different shows, that's because it was actually 3 shows pasted into one

The Super Sentai series has been running in japan since 1975. It was up until 1992 that we had our first adaptation, this time from the Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger, Gosei Sentai Dairanger and Ninja Sentai Kakuranger series.
The Mighty Morphin success led to an endless chain of adaptations that varied a lot in success
