The Best Part of Block One's Presentation Was Not Voice... But WebAuth. In My Opinion!

in #eos5 years ago

Finally! EOS (i.e. block.one) unveiled their social media platform, called Voice.

From what I could see it's far from being a threat to Steemit, but it is worth taking a look at how it develops in time.

I'm curious how their KYC process goes, if a wave of users decides to join the new platform, onboarding might be even slower than Steemit had in its beginnings. Could be a major bottleneck for adoption.

I don't really understand their reward system. What is the value of the Voice token since there is no market for it (you can't buy it, so you probably can't sell it either, not at a market price anyway)? I mean other than allowing people to become visible on the platform.

Ok, possibly they will have a better content discovery than currently generated on Steem. Which is probably why the fuss with EIP for HF21 here on Steem. But Voice was presented as a "Steemit killer", which I highly doubt (not as "Steem killer", since it's a dapp). If Steemit wants better content discovery to fight Voice, they should tweak the trending page at the dapp level, and so should the other dapps on Steem. Different dapps, different trending pages, even better.

I watched the entire presentation of block.one. Highly disappointing as a viewer! Imagine what I would feel as a stakeholder...

Take any SteemFest presentation by comparison... Steem has 'alive' audience which interacts, cheers, claps, asks questions etc. The audience of block.one presentation was either missing - which would be hilarious because they were referred to at several moments -, or they are completely unimpressed, bored, not interested.

I did find a few interesting things in the presentation. First of all, you can see a tight collaboration between EOS (block.one) and Coinbase. I'd say we shouldn't hold our breathes on getting STEEM listed on Coinbase any time soon...

The other was the integration of WebAuth into EOS. This seems like a highly secure method to interact with the blockchain, which appear to be supported in all major browsers. Such a security feature goes a long way with serious businesses, even if it might not be of interest to many individuals. It's worth exploring for Steem, especially in light of SMTs, whenever they will finally make their way back from the back burner where they were forgotten.

Sort:

i don’t get it. maybe it’s my ignorance to other projects but i just wasn’t impressed.

all that money. all that hype. and didn’t even have a working project for us to look at it?

whatever. best of luck to them. i’ll join and poke around (if i’m ever able to) but for me it was hardly the steemit killer it was being branded as.

Oh yeah, I had a feeling that would be the case. And they know it. EOS can't compete with Steem on the social media aspect. They are too general of a blockchain for that. But they have enough similarities with Steem code to create a small social media platform. Will it be viable if it grows? I doubt it.

if there will be some way to join without kyc, I'll join it, but not for now

No, you will only be able to join by going through a KYC process.

it has open code so maybe someone will make another entrance point

Dan Larimer put a lot of emphasis on 'real people' and how their identities can be used in the future by other dapps on EOS. It would be a real bust for them if someone would be able to circumvent the KYC process.

It would also be the end of Voice if they thought users would approve of a KYC process and they won't.

I have to take a look at Voice... But, as I can see from others reviews, it looks that it will be something like decentralized Twitter.. I don't see threat for Steem there...

I haven't created an account but that's what it seems to be.
