Table sugar (sucrose) is a refined carbohydrate that consists of two simple sugars: glucose and fructose.

Sugary foods have calories in abundance and provide an instant energy boost. However, they have little to no nutrients, hence the term "empty calories." White sugar, for instance, has all but 10% of its vitamins and minerals removed. These calories are usually processed by the body into fat, and stored.

Consuming excessive amounts of sucrose can contribute to a number of health issues, including weight gain, obesity, kidney problems, gastrointestinal and cardiovascular disease, depression, hyperactivity in children, and allergies. Only those with a low blood sugar condition benefit from consuming sucrose.
