My Own Lyrics Challenge 1987 - Walk Like an Egyptian - Liam Sternberg

The lyrics of the song “Walk Like an Egyptian” were inspired by the writer noticing someone who seemed to be walking in that iconic manner on the street in New York City. Then he noticed others who were also holding their bodies that way and described them in this song.

The words are a bit of nonsense about how we can all be walking in the Egyptian way. So maybe the Egyptian tomb painting these words are based on are from reality of that time too.

My Own Lyrics Challenge is going through the years to spotlight cool songs and this post is for 1987. “Walk Like an Egyptian'” was the number one song on the Billboard charts for this year, though it was not nominated for any awards. Since then the song has been used in many ads, games, and sampled for other songs. It is truly a part of our shared history now.

The video for Walk Like an Egyptian by the girl-band, The Bangles, was also a huge hit. It features the band in a live performance interspersed with people in New York City doing their Egyptian moves too. This video was nominated for video of the year at the MTV Awards, but did not win.
