(AFP) - The United States (US) pledged not to make a change of regime in North Korea (North Korea), which is currently led by Kim Jong-un. Condition, Pyongyang must comply with Washington's demands of surrendering nuclear weapons.
US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo stated that Washington will also provide security guarantees to Kim Jong-un if it reaches a nuclear deal. Pompeo comments delivered in the program "Fox News Sunday" which was launched on Monday (14/05/2018). He was asked if the US told Kim that he can stay in power if he meets US demands. Pompeo replied; "We have to provide security guarantees, to be sure." The top US diplomat told North Korean leaders that Washington had no intention of attacking Pyongyang, much less by using nuclear weapons. "The United States insists it has no nuclear weapons on the Korean peninsula and has no intention of attacking (North Korea) with nuclear or conventional weapons," said Pompeo, who previously served as head of the CIA.
North Korea has been insisting on needing nuclear weapons to counter what it believes is a US effort to strangle its economy and overthrow Kim Jong-un's government. "Make no mistake about it, American interest here is preventing the risk that North Korea will launch nuclear weapons to Los Angeles or Denver or to the place we are sitting here, this morning," Pompeo said. "That's our goal, it's the final state set by the president and that's the mission he sent me last week, to put us on track to achieve that," he said.
Nevertheless, the US pledge not to overthrow Kim Jong-un's regime depends on the outcome of negotiations with President Trump in Singapore.
