RE: Artificial Unintelligence - Are Computers Making Us Dumb?

in #esteem6 years ago

I've thought about this as well (being a terrible speller myself). My thought around this is that although technology is making is dumber is some regards, it also is allowing us to focus our energy on more deeper, complex, and creative problems by allowing us to not have to remember a bunch of facts and grammar rules etc. When someone asks me a trivia question idk the answer to, I just pull out my phone and answer it there on the spot. Sure i dont commit that to rote memory as well as i would if i had to go to a library and find a book and get an answer that way. But my beleife has always been if you can find the answer on the internet, the question youre asking is not that important.

Interesting point. I wonder if our minds couldn't handle both. We are kind of a use-it-or-lose-it system, so not having to remember a whole bunch of stuff doesn't necessarily free up the resource; rather we just lose the resource - unless it's the exact same resource that does both tasks. Then it just specialises differently.

Take someone that speaks two languages fluently. They are just as fluent in each language as someone that only speaks one of each. That's probably not a very good example :)

ah, who knows. All I know is I can't spell as well as when I was a kid haha.
