Wooden Headboards and Symbols In The Cemetery

As I've said before, I'm not a fan of cemeteries but you can find art in the cemetery as well and today I want to show you something you don't see everywhere. I want to show you some wooden headboards specific to Székely Land which means three counties in Romania, inhabited mainly by Hungarians.

These headboards are used instead of headstones in cemeteries but also as a symbol of commemoration. I'm going to show you both. Most of them are made of wood, rarely of stone. I'm going to cover the names out of respect.

This is a commemorative board for those who had worked at the Székely theater between 1946 and 2016. Each element means something different, I'm going to explain that immediately.

There is a metal plate for each person commemorated here, with the name and dates on it.

Another commemorative headboard for teachers and workers of a certain school, placed in 1994.

This is a burial headboard and the top symbol lets us know it's a wife and mother. The tulip means married woman and if it has a middle, that means it's a mother.

Using these symbols was a way of letting people know who's buried there. The first one dates back to the 19th century.

This is of a young man who died as a hero in 1915.

This is of a mature woman and a mother.

These photos were taken at the oldest cemetery of the town. It's full of interesting headstones. I'm going to go back and take some more photos because the cemetery is huge, there is plenty of material for #cemeteryphotos initiated by @melinda010100. It's full of history, tradition etc.
