From various groups of Mujahideen around the world, the most famous of course is always the Mujahideen of Afghanistan. At first, the Mujahideen fought against the Soviet-controlled Afghan government in the late 1970s. The Soviet Union came out of Afghanistan in the late 1980s because it was not strong against the mujahidin.

Many Muslims from other countries volunteered to help the mujahideen in Afghanistan, and gained significant experience in guerrilla warfare. In this period, the most famous Mujahideen was Abdullah bin Azzam.

Mujahideen were also born in Bosnia during the 1992-1995 Bosnian war following a massacre committed by Serbian troops against Bosnian civilians. The number of Mujahideen at that time is rumored to reach 4,000. They come from places like Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Jordan, Egypt, Iraq and Palestine.

The evidence shows that foreign volunteers arrived at the center of Bosnia in the second half of 1992 with the aim of helping their Muslim brothers against the Serbian invaders. Most of them come from North Africa, the Near East and the Middle East. Foreign volunteers differ greatly from the locals, not only because of their physical appearance and the language they speak, but also because of their combat methods.

The Mujahideen played a role in Chechnya's second war. After the collapse of the Soviet Union and then the declaration of Chechen independence, fighters began to enter various regions. Many of them are veterans of the Soviet-Afghan war and before the Russian invasion, they used their expertise to train Chechen fighters. During the First Chechen War they were feared for their guerrilla tactics, inflicting heavy casualties on Russian troops. After the withdrawal of Russian troops from Chechnya, most of the mujahidin decided to remain in the country.
