Black and white in photography is the creation of monochromatic images using photographic techniques. By using a traditional film camera or digital camera, the artist exposes image media, such as film or digital image sensors and light. This black and white inner light affects the image media in such a way as to leave a permanent trace of the scene on the media. This media is then processed to make the final image or photo.

Black and white photography is more likely to be in the process of making photos using negative films, while black and white photos in the form of color photos are edited with the results of black and white photo finishing to simplify the image and produce photos with gradations from deep black to bright white, each having meaning in memory by using lines of texture, shape, and dark games of light and gradations of various gray ranges without having to eliminate details. Black and white photography is only known in two colors, namely black and white, black to white gradations and the difference in black density that forms the image in the photograph itself. Because people who enjoy black and white photography will focus on 'tones' and won't be confused by other colors. The strength of a black and white photography lies in the black and white gradation itself. In addition, black and white photography also relies on shapes and lines, because the combination of shapes, lines, and shades of black and white will build rhythm in a black and white photographic work.
