Along the Lincoln Highway

in #esteem6 years ago

The Lincoln Highway, which runs from NYC’s Times Square to San Francisco, was one man’s vision during a time when America had few roads. Most roads were dirt and when it rained they turned to mud. Most people traveled by train.

In 1912, Carl Fisher, the man who had founded the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, thought America needed a coast-to-coast highway.

Last week I had an opportunity to travel a few miles across Illinois on the Lincoln Highway. At one of the photo stops we had an opportunity to talk to a mom and her two girls who were descendents of James Lincoln, the brother of Abraham. They were spending their vacation traveling the highway across the Midwest.

Here are a few of the photos I took along the way.

I am hoping for an opportunity to travel more of the route!

Yay, there's a beautiful photo here that I love! Can you guess which one it is? 😀

The one with the 2nd story door? I almost saved that one for the #sevendaysoutside challenge.

That one is good too but I was talking about the stone house with the little tower on top :)

Ahh! It is unusual to see stone farm houses in this area.

Is wood more common?

It is more common, by far.

Very interesting and again great pictures.

Thanks so much!

I love the vintage touch ❤️

Hope you get to travel some more of the route soon. It looks very interesting @melinda010100.

I love that photograph with the door halfway up the wall. presumably it's there to block a whole from the other side. Odd the opening was there in the first place though. 😁

I assume at one time there was a wooden staircase that went to the door that has been torn down and never replaced.

Of course. Duh! Why didn't I think of that @meinda010100? Over complicating things again! 😂

We sat and looked at it awhile before we came up with that theory. There were no signs of where it may have been bolted to the wall. Then we realized the mortar between the stones was new, and would have covered signs of an old staircase.

Maybe not so duh after all then @melinda010100. 😁

Not duh at all!!!

Houses with stone walls look very interesting. I like when there is a stone or brick masonry in architecture. A nice walk, @melinda010100
