Mid-August

in #esteem6 years ago

Mayapples are such a lovely wild plant in the early springtime. They get one large beautiful flower on the stem and that produces a fruit that resembles a small apple, but it is not generally edible. But even as they are fading they add so much interest to the forest edge.

As they unfurl in May, I am reminded of umbrellas for the fairies or gnomes in the picture books of my childhood! But really, I'm sure they provide shelter from the spring rains for many small woodland animals.

I like them because they just grow with no work from me!

I never heard of a mayapple before... I must do some research to see if florida has them.. and if they can be grown here I shall get one!!! Thanks

They grow in woodlands in Eastern North America..I saw zones 3-8.

This is what the look like when they first come up... image
And each plant gets one flower down under the leaf.
