What started as a marketing campaign, has now become a city icon. The Iamsterdam sign can be seen around the city - in whole or in parts. It provides many photo opportunities for tourists and locals (at least when friends and family are visiting).
The Iamsterdam letters in Vondelpark
The letters stand about 2 metres high and 23 metres wide. There are always people climbing, in front of, inside or beside them. The slogan started in 2004 and was meant to attract tourists. However, now that the city is overrunned by tourists - there are talks to remove the letters. Some argue that it symbolises individualism, whilst the city stands for solidarity and diversity. The original campaign focused on the fact that we are all Amsterdam(ers), everyone in the city hence I am Amsterdam - Iamsterdam.
Whatever will be the fate of these iconic red and white letters - visitors to the city have certainly enjoyed them.

Sounds like an interesting debate! Does seem somewhat odd to have the city 'branded' in this way.
Yes - it can be interpreted in many way - so yes it is debatable. Whatever happens though it got the attention they wanted.
