NaNoWriMo is Almost Here

I can hardly wait! November is NaNoWriMo time. NaNoWriMo is short for National Novel Writing Month. This nonprofit organization began in 1999. In 2012, 341,375 future novelists participated. This year, the group anticipate half a million writers will join in. It’s my first time to take part, but I’m already outlining and planning my middle-grade chapter book about a kid who suspects the little old grandmother living next to him is a spy.

One reason I signed up for NaNoWriMo is because you don’t need to be a published writer to sign up. NaNoWriMo writers came from many walks of life, from auto mechanics to out-of-work actors. But, at the end of November 2017, they were able to add “writer” to their resumes.

The goal for each participant is to write 50,000 words during the month of November. The organization provides the pep talks and encouragement, opportunities to form local writing groups, and advice from published authors. This year, scheduled authors include James Patterson, Marie Lu, Lev Grossman, Rainbow Rowell, Patrick Rothfuss, Catherynne M. Valente, Bella Andre, Malinda Lo, Holly McGhee, Ralph Peters, and Jeff VanderMeer.

Over 250 NaNoWriMo novels have been published, including Sara Gruen’s Water for Elephants.
