Overeating

Next week I will be sixty-six years old and I am blessed to have a reasonable portion of health and strength. I try to eat healthy foods, exercise and walk so that my last days here on earth will be my best days.

I was brought up eating Soul Food like most people in the African-American community. Most of the foods were fried chicken and fish, but we also ate plenty of green vegetables, black eyed peas, yams, macaroni and cheese and lots of pork.

We were always encouraged to eat large portions at each meal and most of my family members even today have a hard time pulling away from the table when they are actually full. Sometimes eating habits that we were taught at an early age will follow us into adulthood.

Fast forward to fifty years later, I’ve tried to continue to eat healthy, but not eat large portions at each meal. I have been on a plant-based diet off and on for many years.

There is a direct correlation between what I eat and how I feel. I have always had a hard time digesting beef, even as a child. Today I eat a variety of green vegetables, grains, fruits and nuts. I also eat a lot of beans for protein.

However, one of my challenges is, if I find a wonderful tasty dish that I love, sometimes I have a tendency to overeat even when I am full. I guess it is hard to break old eating habits.

My weakness is bread. Like you it stems from childhood.

We were the "Wonder Bread and Cold Cereal Generation"

I try not to eat bread at all now, and I avoid any processed foods as much as possible.

I love bread as well, but had to give it up. My children ate so much cold cereal I feel bad when I think about it. If I came in from work and didn’t feel like cooking, it was cereal time.
