Is there a new ASIC Ethereum Miner?

Death of 200% Markup on GPUS?

Bitmain is claiming to be months away from releasing an ASIC miner for EthHash, the algorithm used by Ethereum mining.

ASIC miners are single purpose machines designed to quickly and efficiently mine one algorithm putting GPUS to shame. ASIC is the reason why using GPUS to mine Bitcoin is pointless.

“During our travels through Asia last week, we confirmed that Bitmain has already developed an ASIC…for mining Ethereum, and is readying the supply chain for shipments in 2Q18,”
Christopher Rolland - Susquehanna analyst

Christopher also claims at least three other vendors are working on Ethhash ASIC miners.

But I thought Ethereum was ASIC proof?

Ethereum was designed to be anti-ASIC, and the use of these miners maybe limited as the Ethereum foundation can alter their algorithm to make them ineffective. The question is if the miners can be corrected with just firmware updates. It could turn into a cat and mouse game while owners of ASIC miners make a killing due to the massive advantage ASIC mining brings.

very serious things happening in crypto this year. seat belts on everyone! thank you for the info great article

That is absolutely astonishing! If that is true than the whole Ethereum mining story will be turned upside down. And not only that, just imagine how many video cards will be useless )) Everyone will start selling them for really cheap. Might be a good thing for gamers though.

What do you think the impact will be if that turns out true? Because I still cannot believe it.

I think GPU card prices will return to normal prices, they will never "fall" as gaming industry keeps them at insane prices already but they will stop selling for 200% MSRP.

Nvidia & AMD will not be happy as they have been making a killing, it is possible they will respond with their own solution as they have a lot of resources and experience but I suspect they won't get into ASIC territory.

That is true. If miners decide it is not profitable to mine anymore and will sell their video cards, the second hand video cards will be very cheap for a person who does not mind a used card for playing games ))

@ipromote, do you mind helping me out with one Steemit project our team is working on?

I've already written a post showing that this so called ASIC is no better than a good 7 card GPU rig.

You got some great points in there, if it is really only 200-220MH/s that's going to be a big disappointment. But what I see is 600-800Mh/s.
