They have to think of what society would say if she bought that particular piece of clothing, if it would be suitable for the event she were attending, how often could she wear that particular piece of clothing and so on. On the other hand, men are somewhat similar.

Most men would like to keep up with the trends and impress the people he surrounds himself with and society ans that's why they need the help of their partners when trying on clothes. The thought of your partner asking for their opinion on the clothing they are trying on is a flattering gesture because they're dressing up for you and would like your "approval". The variety of clothing men are offered may be less than women but at the end of the day, it's the effort that's being put into dressing up for the occasion that counts.
