SAFE AND STIMULATING PLAY

Balance is key when helping your child to get their vestibular system moving, so a 'safe but stimulating' environment should be your goal.

My advice to parents is to start low and go slow! Start with playground equipment that is more manegeable based on their skills set, such as climbing the jungle gym or a tire swing.
Then progress to a more difficult skills set, such as the fireman's pole or monkey bars.
Being observant is the best way to monitor your child's enjoyment of vestibular input and play - watch their reactions and never force them to engage in any type of play that causes distress. Some children process sensory information differently. If you are concerned that your child is overly reactive or sensitive to vestibular input, consult your paediatrician or an occupational therapist.

As a parent you're most likely to eye out 'that' piece of equipment with which your child may have difficulty - even before they have registered that it is there! Be ready to step in at any time, but do let them have a go.

Facilitate their problem-solving skills by asking questions such as:
"What do you think will happen if you....?" or "Can you think of another way to...?", then let them perform their trial and error and process the information that's being fed into the vestibular system.

I hope you find this piece helpful. Thank you.
