Mi’gmaq onto something

Several years ago a young girl was removed from her reserved and placed in the Foster system; There she was raped by her foster father and then eventually committed suicide.

Her name was Mona Sock.

In the ensuing years her attacker was investigated and arrested, but it also lead to a major looking into the News Brunswick system.

What came out of that was a program to keep the children in the community, which went into effect one year ago.

As part of the program community programs were started in seven reserves to help families in need.

Safe homes where put out for kids in danger to go and stay.

Therapy was set up for families to get together to work out what needs to happen; it gives other family members a chance to volunteer to take in the children; Or remove the family member in trouble so the kids can stay.

There are situations when the kids will have to leave the community but there’s procedures in place so they’re still connected.

Leading to the year end report.

The final verdict is there are issues but overall it’s working, and leading to resolutions.

Give it another few months and I hope other provinces will be looking into expanding the program.
