Manaia : The Devil's Pit

The Devil's Pit is a gaping chasm on the border of Euchao and Shevarah. The landmark is considered one of the enigmatic seven - mysterious marvels, natural or man-made, that have survived the ancient world and leave modern-day Manaians puzzled by their origins.

The crevice is over 6 miles in length and almost a half a mile across at the widest section. Academic investigators have historically accredited the canyon to a falling celestial object said to have impacted Manaia at great speed thousands of years ago. Some have even posited that the mountain ranges all over Manaia did not exist before the event, and that they were formed by the velocity of the object as it struck.

Many of the religious teachers throughout antiquity have agreed with the theory, but assert that the "celestial object" that fell was none other than Slaekin - the dragon, and the enemy of man who fell from the favour of God and was cast down to Manaia. The assertion is based upon a selective interpretation of the Holy texts, with many other followers of the Hehuian faiths claiming that Slaekin was never among God's favoured sons, but rather he is a shadow borne of man's misdeeds before the light of God.

While the origins of the Devil's Pit remain unknown, extensive research and investigation has been and continues to be conducted towards that end. Most peculiarly, the crevice has been found to have no discernible "bottom." None have ever descended further than a mile into the chasm due to reportedly increasing temperatures, beginning around half a mile down.

Though the Devil's pit is not mentioned in the Sobanite Libra or the Kuzu Aklatan, it is spoken of briefly in the Decidein Grammon and is pivotal to one prophecy of the Agwa localised to select branches of the Aman religion.

Once a location visited by tourists often, increasing bandit activity in the area over the past few years has rendered the location a danger, dissuading many from visiting the landmark. It is suspected by the commander at Beerah that the bandits have been using the pit to dispose of the bodies of their victims.
