I found the worldwide organisation called Toastmasters to be an excellent induction into all thing - public speaking. You can attend their meetings each week and they start off by giving you very small speaking roles - but all the experience builds up each week until you then prepare and deliver your first speech - which is all of 5 minutes.
I highly recommend Toastmasters for anybody who wants to gain experience, technique, confidence and over coming fears of public speaking.
