Trumpeter Swan

The trumpeter swan, once almost driven to
extinction, with only 127 breeding individuals
in existence in the 1930's.
Today with captive breeding, reintroducing to ....
former ranges with wild birds, and feeding programs
their numbers have recovered to 34,000.
These swans stay in S Ontario all winter due to
the feeding, it was found if left to migrate only....
50% would return from the U.S.
Very similar to the tundra swan. The
trumpeter has a "v" shape in the top of
the bill, whereas the tundra's is more
of a "u", and some have a small orange dot.
An interesting fact, they incubate their eggs by....

covering them with their webbed feet.
They are the heaviest of birds in North America....
with males averaging over 26lbs, all that weight means...
they need about 100 yards to take off, which is
quite a sight to watch.

Thanks, there are about 200 of them. They are on the feeding program, and all tagged. Someone tried to steal one yesterday, trying to put it in their car, cops came ..lol
I can't picture one of them cooperating if it didn't want to go...
They are on a feeding program, they are very approachable...was on cbc
Prob had trouble getting it to fit being so big..lol

Awesome photos of the swans that I never knew about and I enjoyed the info about them. Their feet are huge so I can see why they use them to incubate their eggs. It must be amazing to watch them take off. : )
Thank you, they are great to watch, they stay in pairs and interact with each other constantly, and their very vocal, with a pleasant honk!
