Pathetic indeed!
Comedic horror I'm not sure what to call this but the guy is such a bafoon and ridiculous. Also creepily you managed to capture the seedy side of the medical business kind of like Bringing out the Dead. The part you wrote about him picking up the box I had a momentary associative memory of John Lydon talking about (and being disgusted at) seeing a girl on the street with a fetus in her handbag. Lots of uneasy and shocked feels from this story. Great writing!
