He saw the front door open. It had become a routine. He would sit in the library across the street and watch the house, and like always, she would run out chasing after a balloon or kite, her ponytail bouncing up and down her back. He taught she looked so small but he didn’t mind. His heart was fond of tightening up whenever he saw her.

Today was no different. She was laughing as she chased the yellow balloon. He always imagined she smelled like roses. Baby Sophie smelled like jasmine. His Mama always put it in the water before giving her a bath.

A chuckle brought him out of his reverie. He looked up just in time to see a boy running after her. She was laughing as the boy caught the balloon. He frowned and folded his fingers into a fish. That was Josh all right. He would have to beat him up in school tomorrow, then he would pull her hair to get her attention. That was what he heard uncle Richard said to do when you want a girl to listen to you.
