Nelly's Secret
Episode 3
Dad was sitting on the cushion directly opposite the 42 inches plasma TV. That seat was unanimously addressed as Daddy's seat by every resident of the House. Something had to be special about it because Eng Odeh never got tired of calling down thunder and lightning on anyone who made the slightest attempt to sit on it. Even his wife, a 42 year old tall fair and beautiful Uruan woman was not exempted. Everyone had to avoid Daddy's seat.
"What have you been doing since morning" Eng Odeh queried.
"I was waiting for you to come back so that I can get money to pay my way to my JAMB Class" Nelly humbly replied.
"See? I knew it" Eng Odeh bellowed. "I knew that you can't be useful to yourself or anyone else even for once."
He adjusted his vintage tie and continued. "You've been at home since morning but look at my parlour. Just look at my Parlour. I spent 7 million Naira just to set up this parlour and my own daughter can't even sweep and arrange it. You think Amaka the househelp will come and help you in your husband's house? I pity you. You cannot even sit down and read. I have provided everything in this house..... every damn thing. Common to sit down and read, your buttocks will be peppering you You have failed JAMB 3 times already and I know you will fail again. Can a child be more useless than you?"
Nelly trailed her Dad's lips with the innocence of her eyes as he spilled out every unkind word which ministered pain to her marrow. That had lately become a routine. It was of insidious onset and worsened when her immediate younger sister secured admission to study Pharmacy in the University. Dad ceased every opportunity to remind her of how useless a sperm product she was. Each episode didn't need to be provoked. it could come spontaneously; on the road, in the park, or even at christian meetings.
As she savoured the day's dose of Daddy's loving pill, she shut her eyelids tight and allowed a solitary tear make a lazy journey to the corner of her supple lips.....
She could not bear it anymore so she took a bold step and scurried towards her bedroom.
"Ooh! So you now have the audacity to walk out of your own father?" Eng Odeh screamed. "What won't I see? This is the height of it. This house will not contain the two of us." He kept crowling even as Nelly hastily headed to her room while hearing his voice fading into the background.
She took a giant gambado and fell on her bed and began a fresh episode of bawling. She cried until her pillowcase was totally soaked. What crime did she commit to be born on planet earth? Was it her fault that things didn't work out in her own life like her parents expected?
