A second chance - Fiction - Story

It was definitely an evening to remember. Sylvia could feel the fluttering in her stomach when she turned around to wave goodbye to her friend. As she watched him drive away she couldn't believe that she was so stupid not to meet him earlier.

Her friends, especially Hazel, had been begging her for months to meet Fred, but she didn't want to. She liked her life the way it was. No complications. She was quite in the habit of looking after herself, but she was rather selfish when it came to her time. She was good at keeping herself busy and did not have time for a man in her life. Her life was comfortable and she enjoyed having her friends over for dinner twice a week.

Sylvia's been alone for five years. Her husband died five years ago in a car accident and she thought that she would never get over that, but she got used to being alone. She was very fortunate that she did not have to work, and George left her enough money as well as a paid-off house. After months of nagging she eventually agreed to at least meet Fred for coffee, and she was shocked when she saw him for the first time. She felt instantly connected to him, but he reminded her so much of her late husband that it was absolutely scary.

Fred had very similar facial features to George, and they had the same blue eyes.  When he greeted her with that smile, he made her heart jump. They had so much to talk about, and she could see that he was hungry for attention. She didn't think she missed it but realized that she did when they started talking. It felt good to talk to someone that was interested in her. He made her feel special again.

She made some coffee and sat down at the kitchen table. She giggled at herself, and felt like a teenager that just had her first kiss, but it was different. She felt as if she met her soulmate.

Fred drove back to the home with a big smile on his face. The second that he met Sylvia, it felt as if they had known each other for a thousand years. She was the absolute best thing that happened to him in the last two years. Ever since his kids dropped him off at the old age home, he hated every single minute of his life.

Life was not such a burden anymore. He totally enjoyed spending time with her and he did not feel so constantly alone and negative. He has always loved gardening, and he looked forward to spending some time with her in her beautiful garden. She looked like she too had green fingers and she made him think so much of his beloved wife that passed away eight years ago.

He was looking forward to many more years of happiness and if it wasn't for Hazel that kept on nagging him to take her out they never would have met.

Such a sweet moment in time... I can relate to "wanting to be alone" but if not for my husband's nagging I never would have gone out on that first date

A "yes", that's all it took and two souls connected... nice 😊
