"John, what are you doing here?"

"I came to see you...to talk."

Susan told the little boy to go and play and invited John inside.

"Is he mine?"

Susan nodded.

"I'm not here to make trouble John. He thinks his father is dead. I moved back to town because it is all we have left. His father died eight weeks ago in a car accident."

"Why did you never tell me?"

"It was a mistake John, you know it as well as I do. Nothing should have ever happened between us."

" If Mary ever found out then it will be over for us."

"We are not going to tell her John. Just because we made one mistake all those years ago, we can't risk destroying the life of one person that stood with you all your life."

John nodded. "It's going to be difficult with you living here."

"I don't plan to stay here for long. I'm healing. He is healing... we just needed a break from the city but we will go back in a few months."

"You can't expect me to find out I have another son, and then just take him away again."

"He might have your blood...but he is not your son. We don't need anything from you...."

"This discussion is getting us nowhere. I have to go, but I'll be back. I have to decide what I'm going to tell Mary."

"It's going to get you nowhere John. Don't tell her, you will destroy everything. I will deny everything if you ever tell her, and you will make a fool of yourself."

John drove away feeling devastated. He had another son, and Susan was denying him the right to be his father. He had to stay silent and it was going to eat him up every single day of his life.

He drove back to the deli, and Betty handed him the basket. On his way home, John felt a sharp pain in his right shoulder and it traveled down to his chest. Suddenly it was all dark in front of him, and he couldn't see straight. The pain was overwhelming.  He lost control over the truck and he hit the nearest tree.  It was over for John.

Mary cried when the police announced it to her an hour later. Her wonderful loving husband was gone.

At the funeral everyone showed their respect towards Mary and told her what a good person he was.

Susan also attended the funeral, and just before she left, she gave Mary a hug. Mary looked at the little boy next to Susan, and somehow...he reminded her of John. She knew it was impossible, but she took it as a sign, that John was watching over her.  She smiled and waved as they drove away.

Skeletons in the cupboard always come out eventually @giantbear another enjoyable read.

finally i get reorientation of story. You can make us feel sad but also feel better to solve this story. We know sometime we make a mistake, and try to fix it. We know how John and Susan feel. what then happens is to regret the events that happened to them. if we are positioned as John or Susan it will be very difficult to behave. and allowing yourself to be a candle that is willing to burn for the good of all so that light at night will always be real and eliminate darkness. But it's hard for us to do it too.
there are only traces left on the faces of John's children whether Marry or Susan realize it will immediately remind John.
Complication with a tragic solution. Sad ending doesn't have to be unattractive ...
you are a creative writer.
