The ticket

The window was dirty and she was wondering how many people had already poked their nose against it. She could see so many clouds passing by, in the most calm and peaceful way. Clouds that looked happy, clouds that were ready for change.

It was her first time in an airplane. Up until now she had only dreamed about experiencing a moment like this. Flying to somewhere was only for other people, not people like her. Not for people who didn't have a dime for spare.

But that changed last week when she found a ticket on the floor. As it later on seemed: the golden ticket. It was just laying there on the sidewalk having no owner, no place where it came from. She decided to pick it up and take it with her. She had looked around her to see if anybody had lost anything. But nobody was noticing her. As always, she was just blending in to the scenery.

She waited for a couple of minutes to see if anybody came for the piece of paper. But nobody came. Later that night she was watching the crackled television from their neighbors house. She did this from her regular spot standing inside the neighbors garden and looking through the window. As always the neighbor was watching the 8 o clock news.

She hated the news. Always only more wars, drama, fighting, money and other stuff she didn’t like. But it was at least watching something. The feeling of having something normal and steady in her life. At her own house she would never have this feeling.

Every single day she would be reminded that she was only an extra mouth to feed. And that she would only be useful if she was born as a boy. Now she was just too much. She never understood why this had to be mentioned so much. As if it was her fault that she turned out to be a girl.

There wasn’t money for anything at home. Not for food, not for clothes, not for school, and certainly not for anything fun in life. But she had dreams. Dreams which she had seen on the neighbors television. About nice places with smiling people. People who were laughing. People who were enjoying their lives. She loved seeing that.

The news ended today with the story of a lottery ticket that had not been claimed. And what the winning number where. Feeling the ticket in her pocket still she decided to take a look at it.

Everything went so fast in the days afterwards. She had told the producers that she did not want to be on the television to be recognized. Not because she did not want the fame, but the guilt was eating her. The guilt of that somebody else did not win.

The clouds in the plane were staring back at her. Some moments it almost seemed as if they were talking to her. That she was a cheater, that she had stolen somebody else's future. But actually what she had done was only pick up the ticket from the floor. Because other people found themselves too good to look at the floor. And she took a sip from her fancy, bubbly drink and closed her eyes.
