One of my favorites was Ed McBain, AKA, Evan Hunter, AKA Salvatore Lombino. As McBain he wrote the 87th Precinct novels. What made them special was that they were How-done-it's instead of who-done-its. He told you who the culprit was (usually the Deafman) and you had to figure out how he pulled it off.

Now that is an author that I haven't read before, thanks.

I love his writing, he has a really wry sense of humor. The main characters in the 87th Precinct stories are Det. Steve Carella and his partner Meyer Meyer Meyer (whose father also had a wry sense of humor).

I saw an interview in which he was asked about his aliases and he said: "You sell a lot more books as Evan Hunter from Conneticutt than Sal Lompino from Harlem.
