Falling Sky

A very long time ago, a time so long ago that humans were considered to be a rather strange anomaly, and somehow animals were capable of cognizant and rational thinking (or maybe this happened on a different planet, where goats and chickens had developed brains of similar magnitude and capacity as those of humans on this planet Earth, I do not know), there lived a chicken.

For the sake of simplicity, but recognizing that we humans love to give things, which we must refer to often, names, we shall christen this particular bird “Chicken”. A prosaic name, but one that, given the scope and intention of this story, will have to do.

Now Chicken was of a very easily troubled disposition, and was the first to always think that some impressive calamity of world ending dimensions was to come upon the earth (or whatever planet we have these sentient animals) simply at the turn of the wind, or that the sun was about to plunge everything beneath its glare into an age of fire, if she perceived that the temperature of the day was even in the slightest bit hotter than it had been on the day before.

It would be a very great omission on my part to leave out another very important quality of Chicken. If ever there was a good gossip, no, a great one, it was her.

Eager and able to spread news of any kind, even if such was second-hand, or even third- or fourth-, or sixtieth-hand information, and doing that within the space of two heartbeats without even so much as caring to check up on whether the news being peddled was true, Chicken was without a bit of doubt, an accomplished busybody, what people of my tongue would refer to as “amebo”.

Most unfortunately, it seemed that everyone, or at least almost everyone in the immediate vicinity of Chicken, was of a much similar nature, prone to being frightened at the littlest cause, and almost more likely to carry news, especially if it was worth talking about, whether it was true or a lie.

In any case, such is to be expected, and no less in a place where Chicken was held in high esteem, because people thrive best in places where their personalities or attributes are celebrated and given much import.

In a place of more steady-minded individuals, or one where people disliked gossip, someone such as Chicken would have been forced to change, or pressured to leave, as she would not get on by with her neighbors.

It is here our story begins.

To be continued...

Thanks for coming!
