Mabel (a short fiction story)

It only took Mabel one test to confirm her fears, she was pregnant. And after leaving the hospital she went straight to Mike's house. This was the first time she would be going there as he had always avoided her from coming- he always had a reason why he didn't want her to visit him. After trying to get his address from him a lot of times which he refused, she had eventually pleaded with his friend who reluctantly gave it to her.

On her way to Mike's house she remembered how they met. Her friend Laura had dragged her to the club to the club that day after they closed from work. At first she didn't want to go but then she thought, it was a weekend so why not.

And as usual the moment they both stepped into the club, they got the attention of the male folks then this one guy had walked up to her and asked for a dance. Normally she would have refused but there was something about him that she just couldn't place her finger on and so she accepted to dance with him. As she walked to the dance floor with him, she could see the surprise on Laura's face as this was the first time she would agree to dance with a stranger immediately he asked. And as the night began to turn to dawn, it was time to leave. They both exchanged numbers and every time just kinda played out fine.

Getting down from the bus she thought of what Mike reaction would be hearing the news. She knew she could take care of the baby on her own but she hoped and prayed things don't go south. She loved him so much and wouldn't have wish for anyone else to be the father of her unborn child.

ding dong she rang the door bell and a woman showed up, she was carry a little girl on her hands. "Who are you looking for? " the lady asked but Mabel was speechless "I'm sorry isn't this Mike's home?" she asked hoping to be at the wrong apartment.

"Jessica Who's at the door?" Mabel recognised the voice but she still didn't want to believe. She hoped it wasn't what she was thinking but her hope was dashed when she saw Mike appear at the door.

"Mabel! " Mike said surprised

"Daddy, daddy" the little girl on Jessica's arms sang out...

"Daddy?" Mabel asked before running out, tears streaming down her cheek. She heard Mike calling after her but she didn't look back.

The next day at work she narrated everything to Laura "hmmm this is really surprising" Laura said "But he doesn't look like someone who will do such. Has he called or anything?" she asked..

"Yes he has, but I'm not in the mood to speak to him" Mabel replied

"Well you should, there might be an explanation" Laura replied..

"What explanation would they be Laura.. He was married'Mabel replied this time tears were rolling down her eyes again "I have to go, I can't work well in this situation" she replied before going to the manager's office to take permission.

And just as she got home, right in front of her door was Mike with the lady she saw at his home the other day "Before you say anything, in just want you to know that Jessica is just my babies nanny. She started taking care of my daughter ever since her mother, my fiancé dumped her with me some few years ago. Mabel that was the reason I didn't want you to know where I lived because I didn't know how to explain it to you" Mike said in one quick breath

"yes ma'am it's the truth" the lady confirmed it.

"I'm sorry for not telling you sooner Mabel " Mike apologized..

"No, no, no I'm sorry for not trusting you" Mabel replied and quickly hugged him "and guess what? I'm pregnant" she said with a smile.

"Are you for real? " Mike asked excited and he could see Jessica smiling..

"Yes, I'm serious" she said laughing.

"** okay I don't have a ring right now but will you marry me? "** Mike asked kneeling on one kneel.

"Yes yes I will" Mabel yelled and they kissed right at her doorstep.
