Follow the Leader~A Snook Tale

in #fiction5 years ago (edited)

White pelicans are gregarious. What one does, they all do. Jonny, the leader, was the worse one. It was time to take over and throw him to the hogs, thought the flock. What Jonny expected of everyone, each day, was too much. Up hills and down hills. No babies were being born. The flock was going hungry because Jonny was afraid of water.

Jonny went out of his way to make sure they were as far inland as possible. To stay alive, the flock, late at night, when Jonny was sleeping, quietly ran to the ocean. Once there, they ate as much as they could before they had to head back and follow their leader once more.

The people of Billview were getting very tired of being woken up in the middle of the night from the noise of one hundred pelicans eating. It was a no-win situation for both sides and one that could not go on much longer.

The flock had followed their leader Jonny and ended up in Nebraska. At a meeting late one night the group came to a consensus. Jonny didn't want to move from Nebraska back to Maine. The flock of pelicans wanted families of their own. Lazy days down by the water eating until they felt like bursting. Was this too much to ask for?

Whispered amongst the flock during the day was the thought of how much they all missed the taste of french fries from McDonald's.

Who would have thought they ever would miss tourists? You knew life was hard when you missed tiny kids screaming, pointing at you, almost poking your eye out, over what your current life had become.

Nomads on the road to nowhere. Well Nebraska, but Johnny wasn't done with traveling anytime soon. He kept wanting to see what was over the next hill.

Sore feet, wings, and starving, the pelican mafia brothers pulled Jonny aside and killed him. They had had enough. It was time to go back home to Maine. It was well past time to be on the ocean, resting and getting fat on french fries.

The flock had a quiet burial for Jonny. Once done, they started back the way they came. Trudging home, hoping they didn't lose too many before they made it back to safety.

Get a fine pen free! Free I tell you! All you have to do is make it through the gauntlet of pelicans! The circus barker roared.

The town's children squealed. Crying they begged their parents for the .25 cents it took to go play with the pelicans. It was the biggest show in the circus this year. Word of the pelican's massive show had spread far and wide through the country.

You see, Jonny's flock never made it back to Maine. They ran into some trouble in Illinois on the way back. The sky had turned an odd shade of green, the land had become quiet, the air had stopped moving.

Lucky for the flock of pelicans there was a public park nearby that offered some kind of shelter from the horrible storm making it's way past them.

The next morning the pelicans were woken by the sound of children laughing while running towards them. The children had taken off so fast their parents didn't have time to warn them to stop. The children had so much fun chasing the birds, running paths around them, poking them in the eyes, it caught the attention of the owner of the Baker's Circus.

The owner of the circus saw how much fun the children were having and calculated the cost, in seconds, the upkeep for one hundred pelicans. He quickly made a call to his boys.

He needed bodies and his van to round up all the pelicans as fast as possible. Mr. Baker wanted the pelican flock locked away before the kids became bored playing with them.

That, my friends, is how the Maine pelicans ended up in the circus.

Moral: Be very careful what you wish for. It might come true!

Moral #2: Never blindly follow. Always question, if you are not comfortable with your situation.
