Stuck In Time (Short Story)

William felt the panic swell within him. He could feel the beating of his heart in his ears, his breath became rapid and shallow and his eyesight was starting to blur. Everywhere he looked he could see no traces of human life. His old classroom looked like it had been abandoned for years, yet he had only fallen asleep for a short time. The last thing he remembered was the grunting noise of his science teacher and the occasional sound of feet kicking the table legs.

Hoping he was still asleep, he pinched his arm - nothing happened. He was still alone. Whatever happened, nobody cared to wake him. Could he be the last human alive?

One tear came, then many more followed like water flowing through a dam. He would never see his friends again. Not even his family. They were gone forever.

He sat in the corner of the classroom next to the broken shelf that had once contained many books. It felt as if he had sat there for hours, yet nothing seemed to have changed. The bright sun hadn’t moved. The dense clouds appeared to be fixed. Was time not moving?

The loneliness and the silence was too much for him. He figured he would exist here forever as time was frozen, so he got up to look for an answer. The answer to why Earth was abandoned.

The school corridor looked unusually long, there was no end to it as far as William could see. Everything was missing from the corridor, no junk on the floor, no lockers, and no windows. He could only see the infinite corridor ahead of him and a whole lot of darkness.

There was nothing he could do that would make him feel any comfort.

He tried walking backwards but was stopped by a wall.

A cold chill swept through him when he turned around and saw the wall was filled with pictures.

Pictures of him.

He was looking at the happiest moments of his life. He could see the time he turned ten, the time he got a puppy and the time he got his first kiss. He fell down in shock.

Suddenly something was breathing down his neck with slow and deep breaths. He could feel a cold hand with inhumanly long fingers on his shoulder. All light disappeared. He could see nothing.

Time went on forever, then the light reappeared. He was back in the classroom, looking down at his desk. I’m back to reality, he thought with a smile - but something didn’t feel right.

He slowly looked up. The classroom was empty, but not completely.

A creature was floating in front of him with a ripped hooded cape staring deep into his soul. In its hand was a scythe. William could feel all life being sucked out of him. His memories were disappearing.

“Welcome,” it said with a dark voice.
