That's the difficult thing with me writing fantasy. The stories always seem so much larger. I find it hard to make them more self-contained. :/

I think with short stories and fantasy, I'd look at Neil Gaiman (because he's hella). Usually his are mildly ground in pre-existing fantasy concepts, like the one with the troll under the bridge or even The Ocean at the End of the Lane, which draws from the ancient "Three Witches" concept.

I thought I owned The Ocean at the End of the Lane but I do really enjoy Gaiman's work. Recently picked up his latest, Norse Mythology and it was a brilliant take. Very engrossing.

There's another he wrote called Neverwhere. It's a novel but it's excellent.

Oh, I know. I'm insane over him XD
At one point, I've owned every novel he's written.
