మ్యాచ్‌ ఆరంభం నుంచి బంతి నియంత్రణలో పెట్టుకొని ఆట మొదలుపెట్టిన స్పెయిన్‌ గోల్‌ కోసం పదేపదే దాడికి దిగింది. ఈ క్రమంలో 12నిమిషంలో స్పెయిన్‌ ఆటగాడు సెర్గియో రామోస్‌ ఫ్రీకిక్‌ను రష్యా ఆటగాడు ఇగ్నాషెవిచ్‌ అడ్డుకునే క్రమంలో దానిని సెల్ఫ్‌గోల్‌గా మలిచి స్పెయిన్‌కు ఆధిక్యాన్ని ఇచ్చాడు. అయితే ఆ తర్వాతి నుంచి రక్షణాత్మకంగా ఆడిన ఇరు జట్లు గోల్‌ కోసం తీవ్రంగా ప్రయత్నించాయి. ఈ క్రమంలో మ్యాచ్‌ 40నిమిషంలో రష్యాకు పెనాల్టీ లభించింది. స్పెయిన్‌ ఆటగాడు పిక్యూ బంతిని చేతితో అడ్డుకోవడంతో రష్యాకు పెనాల్టీ అవకాశం వచ్చింది.
