I think overall the sculptures are meant to depict different stages of life. I just did a little reading about Gustav Vigeland and it seems some people consider him a bit of an authoritarian - probably because of sculptures like these and the period in which they were made (1930s) - although these aren't necessarily representative of the works as a whole.
