Shiro, forced to witness a 'battle of wills' where his companions were voraciously attacking the girl's soul has our empathy. There's nothing he can do to stop the vortices and what's worse is the knowledge that there's more pain to come for him after they've fed.

Dark and unnerving, we see the girl change before Shiro's eyes. Add to that the symbolism with the broken figure and the heartache when he realizes that he didn't even know her name. It's enough to hit all the feels and stay with a reader long past the end of the story.
