A Beginner’s Guide to Pole Fishing
Pole fishing is a very different type of angling because it doesn’t use reels. The reel action is transferred to the fishing pole where anglers retrieve the pole whenever there’s a catch. An entry level angler can easily take advantage of pole fishing because of its structure that aims in simplifying fishing.

Advantages of Pole Fishing
When pole fishing, you don’t need to think on casting on how to properly hold your rod. The maximum length of your pole is the exact length your line could stretch. You place your bait exactly where you want it since you don’t have to cast or hurl the line. Another advantage is the ability to gauge the river floor. If you have a long fishing line, you can use it to gauge or “feel” the river floor which is very essential to determine which parts of the water area have the most fish.

Pricing
One of the biggest drawbacks of pole fishing is the price. A good quality, entry level fishing pole kit will cost more than $500. Of course, renting is a possibility in some fishing areas but it’s a good idea that you purchase your own gear to easily master some techniques related to pole fishing.

Elastics
There are four type of poles based on elastics: solid, latex, hydro and hallow. The most popular is the solid but a bit heavier compared to later versions. Latex is considered pure elastic which contributes to its lightweight factor. Hydro is an increasingly popular type of pole because of the hollow area with lubrication inside (hence the name). The hollow is the same as the hydro except that it doesn’t come with lubrication. The last two types are the lightest and often considered as more forgiving which means it will not easily wobble when there’s a longer connection.

Length and Weight
The weight factor is by personal choice but the length is determined by skill. Entry level pole anglers should not go beyond 36 feet or 11 meters since control could be a lot more difficult when dealing with longer poles. Poles can be 18.5 meters long which could easily strain any beginning angler.

Lines and Additional Equipments
A good pre-stretched line with normal line on top can work well in different fishing conditions using poles. Just make sure you purchase a line that can handle heavier load when you expect this type of catch.

But aside from lines, other equipments should also be considered. The hook should be barb-less and a plummet could be a good addition to learn more about the floor area. Last but not the least is the cupping kit which is an end of a pole with a cup in the end. This allows anglers to place some food in a specific area of the water.
