Having a rough morning? This yummy green drink will get you back up. If you have never heard of Tulsi aka holy basil before, allow me to introduce you to this wonderful healing herb.

Tulsi is an aromatic shrub from the basil family. It is believed to have originated in north-central India and now grows native throughout the eastern tropical world. Within Ayurveda, Tulsi is often used for the treatment of a wide range of symptoms and illnesses. Tulsi or holy basil is often referred to as “The Incomparable One,” “Mother Medicine of Nature” and “The Queen of Herbs,”

In India, Tusi is both used for medicinal and spiritual purposes, hence why they often call it "the elixir of life."

Today, we are in the midst of a pandemic of chronic illnesses such as obesity, diabetes, cancer, dementia, depression and other diseases caused by modern lifestyles that come with a lack of physical activity, excessive use of sugar, fat, salt, alcohol, tobacco and exposure to a toxic cocktail of industrial chemicals.

Therefore, I among many others, believe the solutions to this current health crisis are more likely to be found in the homes and behaviors of individuals than in medical clinics, hospital or pharmacies.

I studied both pharmacy and biology and holistic. Though I can't say all conventional medicine is bad, big corporations, governments, and banks control the industry. By now we all know what that means. Treating symptoms to a certain degree yes, but curing diseases is not in their interest. Money and keeping people sick is.

But enough about the politics surrounding healing and medicine, let's get back to what tulsi can do for you.

SCIENCE AGREES - HERE'S WHY YOU SHOULD CONSIDER ADDING TULSI TO YOUR DIET REGULARLY


Of all the herbs used within Ayurveda and holistic healing practices, Tusli is one you should not ignore. Scientific research is now confirming tulsi's beneficial effects. There is mounting evidence that it can address physical, chemical, metabolic and psychological stress.

It has been found to protect organs and tissues against chemical stress from industrial pollutants and heavy metals. Also, it has been shown to overcome physical stress from prolonged physical exertion, ischemia, physical restraint and exposure to cold and excessive noise.

INGREDIENTS (SERVES 2 FOR BREAKFAST)


1 cup holy basil or Tulsi
1 carrot
3 passion fruit
1 banana (frozen for extra creaminess)
1 cup papaya chunks
1 cup pineapple chunks
1 mango chunks
Fresh turmeric to taste
2 tbsp unsalted peanut butter
3 cups water
Chia seeds (optional topping)
Goji berries (optional topping)
Pinch of freshly ground black pepper (to increase the bioavailability of turmeric's active compound curcumin)

DIRECTIONS


  1. Add all ingredients to a blender and blend until smooth.
  2. Optional: Top with superfoods such as chia seeds and goji berries if you like
