My first ever slow cooker Peach Cobbler

in #food6 years ago (edited)

The party countdown is well and truly on! 5 days til our friends come up and I've got a few things I need to do to get ready. Although my shopping has been ordered and my menu set, I'm still toying with the idea of preparing a warm dessert.

It's been hella cold up here lately and I reckon a warm dessert could be a nice touch. But with everything already going on and not wanting to spend my socialising time cooking, I needed a quick and easy option which really means, something I can chuck in the slow cooker.

Peach Cobbler

Hands up if you've ever had peach cobbler before?

I have never had a cobbler anything in my life but while I was flicking through Pinterest today (search words "slow cooker desserts") it kept coming up. And wouldn't you know, Hubby and I went through a peaches and ice cream phase a few months ago and guess who still had a big tin left.

Many of the recipes I came across claimed their cobbler only needed 3 things. A tin of peaches, yellow cake mix and butter.

Unfortunately I didn't have yellow cake mix. I'm not even sure if we call it that down here but I looked it up and found a recipe for it.

Yellow Cake Mix

2 1/2 cups Plain Flour
1 Tbs Baking Soda
1/2 cup Sugar
Butter

I was also surprised to find I had all those too! At this point I'm having a "It's meant to be!" moment and quickly make up my "yellow cake mix." and decided to go for it!

Ok so here I am with most of the ingredients most of the recipes are asking for... give or take a few grams here and there... 🙈 but I'm determined so I forge ahead with what I have and not necessarily what the recipes are asking for.

My recipe

1 800g Sliced peaches in juice
2 cups yellow cake mix
Sliced butter

Method

I followed the same method as the others which was to.

  1. Pour peach tin in slow cooker
  2. Evenly pour cake mix on top.
  3. Place sliced butter on top of cake mix.
  4. Put lid on, set to low, cook for 2 hours or until cooked.

I treated it like a cake in that I stuck a butter knife in the middle and watched for a clean knife to know if it was cooked or not.

My thoughts

Well first, those experienced peach cobbler people out there, does that even look right?

It tasted pretty good. A tad doughy in some places though, is that normal? I was also expecting a crunch factor, don't know why since everything I've ever put in the slow cooker turned soft and tender.

When paired with vanilla ice cream? 👌

Over all I reckon my first go went alright! Hubby liked it, but it was a bit hard to tell if he was legit or not since O woke him up to eat and he promptly fell back asleep after he guzzled it down.

Serving wise I think it's suitable for 8 people. We had big servings and there's still heaps left.

Must ask Hubby to pick up more ice cream tomorrow.

It's been a food fest of a long weekend for us, a nice few days kicking back, sleeping in and relaxing. This, I'm pretty sure is the last long weekend until October so yeh, was great that we made the most of it. Back to the grind tomorrow.

Do you have a slow cooker cobbler recipe? Maybe a slow cooker dessert that's been a crowd favourite? Please share.

I havn’t tried a dessert in the slow cooker before, but I have tried porridge!! I made 3 attempts, using 3 different Pinterest recipes, each time hoping to wake in the morning to a hot breakfast...but only woke up to overcooked-stuck-to-the-slow-cooker fails 😬 Your cobbler seems to be a success 🙌
